WELCOME TO OUR KAYAK FISHING
SECTION
Fishing from a kayak is not a new
experience, many people have been doing it for decades, only now
with the advent of recreational design kayaks and canoes it is more accessible
to the general fisherman. It's an excellent way to enjoy the art of fishing
teamed with the exercise of paddling, giving you the thrill not only of getting
into some hard to reach places, but with a minimum of fuss and lots of
excitement.
Traditionally, fisherman used open
canoes to fish from, however over the last few years there has been a great change
in the design of kayaks with the advent of recreational designs. They are made
with the average person in mind, and are very stable
and easy to paddle. The old designs have been replaced with larger
cockpit models with sitting area and stability factor maximized.
Also available are the Sit on Top styles that are a cross between a kayak hull
and a paddle ski top. Again these
are very stable and easy to use.
Of course the fisherman wants the
easiest to use and of course the most stable will be easiest to master
initially, but there may be a need to have a degree of speed to get to the best
fishing spots. The question is always "which one is the best"?.
This will depend on what type of fishing you want to do.
Some things to consider are:
As a very general rule the length of the hull will determine speed and the width
of the craft will determine stability. This is of course not taking into account
the hull design factor.
Sit in style recreational kayaks
Generally very stable. Speed depends on the overall length.
Can be lightweight and easy to maneuver.
You are protected from the elements to a large degree.
Canoes are designed for calm rivers and lakes, and generally take 2 people.
Outboard motor brackets are easy to fit on the side of a canoe.
Not easy to re enter if you capsize.
Sit On Top
recreational kayaks.
Originally these were designed for paddling in surf and rapids and over the
years they have been redesigned to cater for a wide range of activities, with
Fishing being one.
Exposed to the elements.
Easy to get on and off.
Can be a little heavier than sit in kayaks.
Some are designed specifically for fishing.
Easier to launch and retrieve in surf areas.
So all in all I
believe that the area you are fishing designates what you use. Canoes are great
in calm rivers and lakes as are the sit in kayaks. The sit on tops are also
simple to take out along the coast with many spots easily accessible by kayak.
